It’s important to have patient voices included in health research, so our thanks to the University of Otago for providing this opportunity with the Live Human Tissue Model Network.

Bowel cancer patients Guy, Dawn, and Jolene attended a networking event to discuss patient perspectives on research with live tissue. This is so the best protocols can be developed for doing this type of work in a patient-centred way.

The Live Human Tissue Model Network is a cross-campus /department research collaboration using live human tissue models to study disease. Live tissue is from a tiny piece of human tissue that’s removed during surgery. Patients have then given consent for it to be used for research.

The tissue is kept viable (‘alive’) in the lab so researchers can study how cells interact, learn more about how diseases develop in people, and improve treatments to fight disease.
