“I had a change in career path and studied nursing in my late 40’s. Two days after sitting my State exam I had a colonoscopy and was told there and then they had found a tumour. I had previously been well; I had experienced a small amount of spotting whilst using the toilet but had put that down to having previous issues from having children and drugs during an operation 18 months earlier.
In a rush of CT scans, MRIs and blood tests I was fortunate enough to find that it had been found early. Still, it was to turn my life upside down for a while, my planned job as a new Registered Nurse had to be declined and instead 6 months of surgeries and recovery.
An ileostomy was very confronting but also empowering to conquer and then a reversal. I want others to know that there is hope in such a scary time, but most importantly, get your butt checked!!!
I am so grateful for my doctor sending me off to a specialist (who was amazing) instead of brushing me off and I’m proud of myself for having it done as I thought I was being dramatic.
I poured over the personal stories when I found out and it really helped, I’d love to help others and give some hope.
The support from Bowel Cancer NZ has been amazing! I’ve referred to the website so many times and continue to.”
